This boat was conceived by Henry Valentine of Los Angeles who wanted a bigger version of his Bertram 31. To promote lightness for high speed performance the hull is built of cold molded plywood. The skin is in three layers of five-ply 3/8 inch plywood, the tow inner layers diagonal and the outer one fore and aft. Topsides are three layers of 3/8 inch plywood covered with 12 oz. of fiberglass cloth and West System Epoxy resin. The decks, cabin and flybridge are also fiberglass/epoxy covered and finished with Awlgrip LP paint. Three layers of 1808 bi-directional fiberglass material was placed at and around the chine.
The boat has been moored in Newport Beach for the last 25 years. It is owned by the local inventor of the Duffy Electric boat. He is an avid yachtsman both in racing offshore sailboats fishing for tuna and Marlin in local waters. As a builder of custom yachts and the largest maker of electric boats in the world Marshall “Duffy” Duffield has re-worked and re-placed every piece of this yacht using his talented boat building experts of wood, metal, glass, electrical, mechanical and canvas. “The boat is sound in every category and ready for immediate cruising and fishing. The boat is a perfect example of the genius of the designer Ray Hunt. His original “Moppy” 31 footer became the most famous advancement in hull shape in my lifetime. There is nothing like being in a Bertram going straight into a sea. The ride is very comfortable and especially dry”.
